Subclass

The Social Justice Barbarian

With the world as exhausting as it is today, we all need some good escapism. That's why we turn to DnD. And if your campaign is like mine, you and your party of unlikely heroes are forced to set aside the idea of a normal life to fight tooth-and-nail against a tyrannical monster who has somehow swindled their way into a god-like seat of power and will do everything they can to maintain their ego-driven oppressive regime. (Perhaps this big bad is a beholder, a mind flayer, or just a really fucking stupid jester in orange face-paint.) Ahhh, what an effective way to escape the problems of our daily lives.

If this is your game, perhaps the Barbarian of Social Justice is for you. When I set out to design this archetype it originally started as a Paladin on an oath to change the world for the better but it just didn't feel right. I wanted to capture the raw fury (the rage if you will) I (and others like me) felt over these last four years as our outgoing president stoked white supremacy and xenophobia, and misogyny. Hopefully this subclass captures the solidarity, the righteous anger, and the movement building we've seen over the last four years in response to all that.

So whether you're playing a barbarian fighting systemic oppression, or just a barbarian who has more thoughts and feelings than a hulkish "me smash" then give this subclass a try. Because the biggest change comes from people too angry to sit back and watch evil happen.

Barbarian: Path of Social Justice

"Hey, Hey! Ho, Ho! This fascist lich has got to go!"

You have grown up in a world where acts of prejudice and/or injustice seem to go continuously unchecked. Barbarians on the path of social justice have had enough and are ready to rage towards a better tomorrow.

Adept Debater

Seeing injustice compels you to speak out. Starting at 3rd level,  you learn the cantrip Vicious Mockery. While raging you can cast it as a bonus action. The Wisdom Saving Throw is equal to 8 + your Wisdom Modifier + your Proficiency Bonus.

Always Vigilant

Stating at 6th level, you are immune to any form of magically induced sleep as you master your efforts to stay vigilant at all times.

Indomitable Dissent

You know how to energize a crowd and motivate others to be loud and press forward. Beginning at 10th level, while raging you and any friendly creature within a 10-foot radius of you is immune to the effects of magically induced fright or silence. Additionally, any friendly creature that begins their turn within 10 feet of you has an increased speed of 10 feet for the duration of their turn.

Cancelation

At  14th level, you are adept at identifying and calling out problematic creatures. While raging, as an action you can let out a primal roar of righteous fury at a hostile creature. The hostile creature must make a (DC15)  Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is silenced for one minute. Additionally, whenever this creature sustains psychic damage, they sustain an additional 1d8 psychic damage from that hit.
